FEWER TOOLS. A BETTER STACK.
A Simple Content Creation Stack for a Solo Online Business
Turn one useful idea into visuals, video and social posts. A focused shortlist for solo online business owners who want to build an audience without collecting subscriptions.

Start with an audience and a useful idea
This stack is for a solo creator or online business publishing educational, explanatory or product-led content. The job is to make something useful, adapt it for the channels that matter and keep publishing at a manageable pace. It is not a promise of followers, sales or passive income.
Choose one audience, one recurring problem and one main channel first. If you only publish written posts, skip the video editor. If you are testing a single channel, publish directly before adding a scheduler. These are three distinct jobs, not three compulsory subscriptions.
| Job | Our pick | Best fit | When to skip it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Create visuals | Canva | Social graphics and reusable designs | Your content does not need designed assets |
| Edit video | Descript | Spoken explanations and educational clips | You are not publishing video or audio |
| Plan publishing | Buffer | A repeatable social posting routine | Publishing directly already works |
01 / VISUAL CONTENT
Canva
Best for: A solo creator making social graphics, thumbnails and repeatable visual formats.
Why it made the shortlist
Canva offers customisable templates and a drag-and-drop editor for social content. We would use it to create a small set of recognisable layouts: a useful tip, a step-by-step carousel and a cover image. Reusing a consistent format leaves more time for the substance of the post.
Meaningful drawbacks
A template can make a post look finished before its message is clear. Starting from the same layouts as other creators also calls for deliberate choices about images, typography and wording. Keep the text readable on a phone and remove decoration that competes with the idea.
Pricing and value
Canva Free is available. Premium templates and features depend on the plan. Begin with the free assets that fit your work; compare current plans before paying for a specific capability.
When to use something else
Use your existing design tool if it already produces consistent results. For a simple text post, the social platform itself may be all you need. Do not add a graphic merely to justify using a design subscription.

02 / VIDEO & REPURPOSING
Descript
Best for: Creators turning spoken explanations, tutorials or interviews into focused videos.
Why it made the shortlist
Descript supports text-based video editing and captions, alongside AI editing tools. Editing through the words can suit a creator whose main task is tightening an explanation. We would start with one useful recording and edit shorter pieces around individual questions, rather than recording an unrelated clip for every post.
Meaningful drawbacks
A shorter extract still needs enough context to stand on its own. Check every cut for meaning and review captions before publishing. Our recommendation is for speech-led content; it is not a claim that Descript is the best editor for complex visual effects or every production style.
Pricing and value
A Free plan is available for getting started. Usage allowances and access to AI features vary by plan. Check the current limits against your recording volume and export needs before subscribing.
When to use something else
Skip it if your content is mainly written or visual. If a phone editor or the editor you already know handles your clips comfortably, keep that workflow until you can identify a task worth changing tools for.

03 / SOCIAL PUBLISHING
Buffer
Best for: A solo business with useful content ready to publish across a small number of social channels.
Why it made the shortlist
Buffer provides social post scheduling, giving prepared content a place in a publishing routine. Its Free plan supports up to three channels and ten queued posts per channel at a time. Those slots become available again as posts publish; this is a queue limit, not a ten-post monthly allowance.
Meaningful drawbacks
Scheduling does not replace responding to people or deciding what deserves to be published. Check support for your intended channel, account type and post format before committing to a workflow. A post that works on one platform may need a different opening, layout or length elsewhere.
Pricing and value
A Free plan is available. Paid plans are priced by channel, so compare the total for the accounts you actually need on the official pricing page. Upgrade only when the queue or required features become a recurring constraint.
When to use something else
For one channel and occasional posts, direct publishing or the platform’s own scheduling option may be simpler. Do not add channels just because a plan includes them.

A practical workflow: one idea, several useful posts
- Choose a real question. Take a question your intended reader asks and write the answer in one sentence. Add an example from your own work or a source you have checked.
- Make the main piece. Record an explanation or write a detailed post. Give it one clear purpose rather than trying to cover an entire topic.
- Extract separate lessons. Turn a useful explanation into a short clip in Descript and a visual summary in Canva. Each piece should make sense without requiring someone to find the original.
- Adapt and schedule. Write an opening suited to each selected channel. Check the preview, links and captions, then put finished posts into Buffer or publish directly.
- Listen and improve. Review replies, saves, relevant clicks and the questions people ask using the reporting available to you. Decide what to explain next. Avoid treating follower totals alone as proof that the content supports your business.
This is a suggested workflow, not a claim that all three products connect automatically. A deliberate manual process is a useful starting point before adding automation.
Where AI fits
Use an AI assistant to suggest angles, challenge an outline or turn your own notes into a first draft. Give it the audience, the question and the source material. Then edit for accuracy, voice and a clear point of view.
Do not publish invented examples, testimonials or experience as your own. Check factual claims against original sources, and review generated captions and summaries in context. More output is only useful when each piece helps the intended reader.
For AI assistant options, see the ChatGPT and Claude section in our one-person online business shortlist. You do not need an additional AI subscription solely to follow this workflow.
Add email when there is a reason to return
Social content can introduce your work; an email publication gives interested readers another way to hear from you. Before adding it to your own business, decide what you will send and why someone would want the next edition. Our Write it. Send it. shortlist covers AI help for drafting, from a general assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude to Rytr as a budget AI writer, and beehiiv, our newsletter pick, for sending, with Kit as an alternative if your email runs on automated sales sequences.
Start with the smallest setup you can sustain. Add a paid tool when it resolves a specific recurring problem, not because a larger stack looks more established.
